Will I have to pay fees?

Support For Students Aged 19+

Lincoln College Fee Remission Policy offers means tested and non-means tested help with course fees for qualifications up to and including Level 2 and for some students aged 19+ studying a first Full Level 3

We also offer the Advanced Learner Loan, which is non-means tested help with course fees for Level 3, 4, 5 and 6 Further Education funded courses. Our Learner Support Fund offers means tested help with course related costs such as travel to college, uniform, equipment, UCAS application fee and travel to Higher Education interviews. We offer help with the cost of Ofsted registered childcare through the Care To Learn scheme for students aged under 20 (non means tested) and our 20+ Childcare Support Fund (means tested). We can also provide assistance through the Free College Meals scheme. Students, or their parents, must be in receipt of a qualifying means tested benefit and either aged 19 to 24 and have a current Education and Health Care Plan, or be aged 19 and continuing exactly the same programme that they started before they turned 19. Introduction

Do you love cooking? Would you like to work in catering one day? How would you like to learn to cook professionally? This course is the perfect place to start.

On the Skills for Catering course, at Entry Level Three and Level One, you choose catering-related units from the options available to achieve an AIM’s Extended Certificate in Personal and Social Development, alongside a City & Guilds Award. There is also a chance for you to complete a range of course-related externally accredited qualifications throughout the year. You will complete a one or two-year course where the ultimate goal is to access either further education within the college or get a job.

There is a large practical element of this course, as you help to run Growing Futures Community Café. It is open to the public where fresh meals are produced daily by the learners. You will work in all areas of the business including cooking, baking and front-of-house serving customers and using the till.

Alongside this, you will complete Maths and English sessions at a level that is suitable for you (Functional Skills or GCSE). Time is given for tutorial, enterprise, enrichment and personal development activities and opportunities. Employability skills and work experience are also delivered related to your vocational choice. You’ll be allocated a Personal Tutor, who will guide and support you through the year. All courses start with an introduction programme to assist learners to settle into College.

As part of the Skills for Catering course, you will have lessons that focus on technical skills and a wide variety of topics such as:

  • Knife skills
  • Preparing and presenting dishes
  • Looking into fresh ingredients, produce, and ways to present
  • Menu planning and cooking for events – planning in advance for upcoming events and considering special dietary requirements
  • Hospitality Customer Service Skills – learning about all aspects of customer service skills; from appearance to language, communication, presentation, and front of house
  • Healthy Eating – an introduction to healthy eating; showing what kind of foods you should eat and in what proportions, to have a healthy and balanced diet and more sustainable food
  • Food Safety – prevent food poisoning and other illnesses within the kitchen environment
  • Prepare and cook stocks, soups, and sauces
  • Prepare and cook a variety of different meat, poultry, and fish dishes


  • Entry Requirements

    No formal entry requirements are needed but the you should be working at Entry Level, have a desire to progress, a strong interest in catering and a willingness to learn. You will be interviewed to identify your specific requirements. An English and Maths assessment will also be carried out at an interview to find the correct level for you.



    Assessment and Progression

    Assessment: Progress is assessed by observation of practical and personal skills and a written portfolio of evidence.

    Progression: This course offers you support with your studies and the curriculum is geared to get you to progress your independent living skills and develop yourself in ways which will assist you to make the transition into mainstream studies or supported employment. Learners are encouraged to progress onto a Hospitality and Catering Level One/ Level Two course.

    What You Will Need To Bring

    You’ll need black trousers, a black polo shirt and black smart shoes. You’ll also need general stationery equipment such as; a pencil case, black pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, pencil sharpener, A4 folder, A4 lined notepad, A4 punched pockets and file dividers.
