Will I have to pay fees?

Support For Students Aged 19+

Lincoln College Fee Remission Policy offers means tested and non-means tested help with course fees for qualifications up to and including Level 2 and for some students aged 19+ studying a first Full Level 3

We also offer the Advanced Learner Loan, which is non-means tested help with course fees for Level 3, 4, 5 and 6 Further Education funded courses. Our Learner Support Fund offers means tested help with course related costs such as travel to college, uniform, equipment, UCAS application fee and travel to Higher Education interviews. We offer help with the cost of Ofsted registered childcare through the Care To Learn scheme for students aged under 20 (non means tested) and our 20+ Childcare Support Fund (means tested). We can also provide assistance through the Free College Meals scheme. Students, or their parents, must be in receipt of a qualifying means tested benefit and either aged 19 to 24 and have a current Education and Health Care Plan, or be aged 19 and continuing exactly the same programme that they started before they turned 19. Introduction

Do you want to work with animals, maybe specifically horses? Are you resilient enough to deal with often upsetting situations while caring for animals, in all kinds of weather? If so, this course could be for you.

If you want to pursue a career in the animal and/or equine industry and have limited experience with animals and or horses this is an excellent place to start. You will work alongside industry experts weekly in the first-class facilities at Rand Farm Park.

This course will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge to progress to the Level Two Technical Certificate in Animal Care or Horse Care.

To become good at what you do, practice is essential, therefore you will participate in daily animal care; horse care; and farm skills such as mucking out, feeding and tidying the farm. This work will be supervised by the college staff and you will be given advice and help on how to improve your work skills.

During this course, you’ll learn:

  • Being organised
  • Developing a personal progression plan
  • Working with others; Researching a topic
  • Finding out about the land-based sector
  • Caring for and feeding animals
  • Moving and accommodating animals
  • Using workshop tools in a land-based setting
  • Growing produce
  • Working with horses.


  • Entry Requirements
    You will need to show animal and/or horse handling ability which will be assessed during a taster day. You will be required to attend a taster day on ‘the yard’ and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report) along with evidence of specific and sustained interest and motivation in animals and the animal industry and/or horses and the horse industry; and an ability to cope with a programme of physical activity.

    Assessment and Progression

    You’ll need to show animal and/or horse handling ability which will be assessed during a taster day. You will be required to attend a taster day on ‘the yard’ and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report) along with evidence of specific and sustained interest and motivation in animals and the animal industry and/or horses and the horse industry. You’ll also need to demonstrate an ability to cope with a programme of physical activity.

    Assessment: Assessment is a combination of internally-set coursework and practical assessments that might include case studies; role-play scenarios; and practical demonstrations.

    Progression: Successful completion of this programme could allow you to progress into further animal-related study or employment within the sector.

    What You Will Need To Bring

    You’ll need workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from our preferred supplier; you will be issued with a suggested book list at induction. You’ll also need general stationery equipment and access to the internet; PCs are available on the main campus.
