Will I have to pay fees?

Support For Students Aged 19+

Lincoln College Fee Remission Policy offers means tested and non-means tested help with course fees for qualifications up to and including Level 2 and for some students aged 19+ studying a first Full Level 3

We also offer the Advanced Learner Loan, which is non-means tested help with course fees for Level 3, 4, 5 and 6 Further Education funded courses. Our Learner Support Fund offers means tested help with course related costs such as travel to college, uniform, equipment, UCAS application fee and travel to Higher Education interviews. We offer help with the cost of Ofsted registered childcare through the Care To Learn scheme for students aged under 20 (non means tested) and our 20+ Childcare Support Fund (means tested). We can also provide assistance through the Free College Meals scheme. Students, or their parents, must be in receipt of a qualifying means tested benefit and either aged 19 to 24 and have a current Education and Health Care Plan, or be aged 19 and continuing exactly the same programme that they started before they turned 19. Introduction

Do you want to work with horses? Are you resilient enough to deal with the physical demands of looking after large animals, in all kinds of weather? If so, this course could be for you.

If you want to pursue a career involving horses, then this is an excellent place to start. You will work alongside fully qualified industry experts weekly in the first-class facilities at Caistor Equestrian Centre where we have access to over 20 horses that will be used in our practical lessons.

Caistor Equestrian Centre is a beautiful purpose-built establishment, which is fully equipped with an international sized indoor and outdoor arena, cross country courses and top of the range American Barn style stabling.

The college provides free transport from Lincoln College Campus to Caistor Equestrian Centre for the practical based days, with theory-based lessons being delivered at our main campus in the city.

This Technical Diploma Level course, will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge in horse-related subjects and gives you the experience required to further develop your understanding. You will also be required to complete an extended work experience placement (150 hrs) within the equine sector.

You will also take part in trips and visits and have talks from guest speakers to develop and enrich your learning experience.

During this course, you’ll learn:

  • Equine health
  • Horse tack and equipment
  • Biological systems of horses
  • Undertake stable yard operations
  • Prepare horses for presentation
  • Equine feeding and nutrition
  • Horse behaviour and welfare
  • The principles of equitation
  • Exercising horses
  • Principles of competition grooming.


  • Entry Requirements

    You’ll need four GCSEs at Grade Four and above or equivalent which include GCSE English Language and Maths. You will be required to attend a taster day on ‘the yard’ and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report) along with evidence of specific and sustained interest and motivation in horses and the equine industry. You’ll also need to demonstrate an ability to cope with a programme of physical activity.



    Assessment and Progression

    Assessment: Assessment is a combination of synoptic practical assessments, internally controlled assessments and written exams.

    Progression: Successful completion of this programme contributes towards your skills and knowledge for your progression to Higher Education or the pursuit of a successful career within the equine industry.

    What You Will Need To Bring

    You’ll need workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from our preferred supplier; you will be issued with a suggested book list at induction. You will need general stationery equipment and access to the internet; PCs are available on the main campus.
